When to See a Doctor About a Cut
Should you place a bandage and wait for it to heal, or should you seek medical help? Read on to learn when your injury can heal on its own and when more care is needed.

Accidents happen in a split second, a fall on the pavement, a DIY project gone wrong, and you end up with a cut you’re not quite sure what to do about.

Knowing where to turn is the first step toward a safe recovery, and it’s important to distinguish between emergency care and urgent care. An emergency room (ER) is essential for life-threatening situations or situations in which you are at risk of losing a limb.

For everything else that requires immediate attention that isn’t life-threatening, urgent care provides the medical services you need.

Our expert at North Tex MedCare Clinic & Urgent Care, Dr. Frank Lee, treats all kinds of injuries, and we’ve asked him to share when it’s a good idea to visit an urgent care clinic.

Assessing the severity of your cut

Not every scrape requires a professional. However, certain characteristics of a wound are clear indicators that you need medical help. You should seek care if:

  • The cut is deep enough to see fatty tissue, muscle, or bone
  • The cut doesn’t close by itself, and a simple bandage can’t hold it together
  •  The cut is on the face or anywhere where you want to preserve function and aesthetics

The next step is to look at whether you can stop the bleeding. If you can’t stop the bleeding after 5 to 10 minutes of applying clean pressure on the wound with a clean cloth, seek urgent care immediately. If the blood is bright red and spurting, it could be a sign of an arterial injury, which requires a trip to the closest ER.

Assessing the cause of the cut and infection risk

The cut may be small and bleeding, or the wound may be closed; what could be a problem is what came into contact with it. If the object that caused the wound was dirty or rusty, it poses a high risk of tetanus or other infections. Debris stuck in the wound can also pose a risk for an infection.

Lastly, bites, whether from an animal or another human, are also prone to infections and often require specialized cleaning and antibiotics.

Get help for your injury

Deciding between the ER and urgent care can be confusing, but a good rule of thumb is the “life threat” factor. Go to the emergency room if the bleeding doesn’t stop or is spurting, if the injury involves a severed limb, or if it is located in an area with vital organs, such as the head or chest.

If the cut is deep or gaping but the bleeding is controlled, if you need stitches or professional wound dressing, or if you suspect you are at risk of infection, come see us. Redness and pus are signs that an infection may already be present.
