Diet Changes to Make When You're on Ozempic®

Weight loss medications reduce food noise, curb appetite, and increase fullness. However, it's still up to you to make healthier choices while taking them. Here’s how to align your eating habits with Ozempic®.

Weight loss medications work by reducing food noise (your preoccupation with all things food), decreasing appetite, and increasing feelings of fullness. However, even with a smaller appetite and increased satiety, you can still consume too many calories.

Ozempic® weight loss is not entirely hands-free, but it can significantly reduce your efforts by mimicking GLP-1, a hormone that regulates blood sugar levels and slows down digestion. This medication makes it easier to stick to any diet.

If you’re considering Ozempic and want to ensure you’re one of the success stories, read on as our expert at North Tex MedCare Clinic & Urgent Care, Dr. Frank Lee, explains what dietary changes can help you lose weight at a steady pace.

Keep an eye on the liquid calories

The daily caramel latte or store-bought smoothie may not seem like much, but they can sometimes pack over 300 calories, leaving you still feeling hungry while having the caloric load of an extra meal.

Switching to sparkling water and coffee with fewer creamers and syrups can save a few hundred calories daily, allowing you to maintain a calorie deficit without going hungry.

And as always, read the labels — you may be surprised by what’s in your favorite coffee or smoothie.

Get your belly full of nutrients

On a calorie deficit, you’ll need to focus on nutrients; otherwise, you may feel depleted and fatigued throughout the process. While a croissant or chocolate bar may contain the same 400 calories as a piece of chicken with vegetables, the sweets will leave you more depleted and jittery. Your body may then crave even more food to compensate for the lack of nutrients.

Give Ozempic a helping hand — eat balanced meals so your body can sustain the deficit and feel better over time, not worse.

Not all healthy foods are diet-friendly

While nut butters, nuts, dried fruits, and hard cheeses are considered nutritional powerhouses, they are also high in calories. For example, just 10-12 macadamia nuts contain around 200 calories, and a cup of dried fruit can pack about 480 calories and a lot of sugar. In contrast, a cup of fresh strawberries has only about 50 calories.

You can enjoy these foods any time you’d like, but keep in mind that it may be harder to keep portion sizes small enough to stay within your calorie goals.
